The people of Haiti were so impoverished they had to think of an alternative food in order to escape starvation. This is how the unique recipe of ‘Bonbon Terre’ was created.
Literally translated as ‘Earth Candy’, the ‘threat’ consisted of soil, mixed with butter and a pinch of salt. Only few years ago, people used to purchase sacs of dry earth, so they can prepare themselves the unhealthy meal. Even though the ‘Earth Candy’ is not the most satisfactory meal, it was still an alternative to the total lack of nourishment.
Even though we can safely say that nowadays the situation in Haiti is much better, knowing about what people have gone through to just find some food should make us all realize how lucky we are.
